Cardiff Airport (CWL) originally operated from Pengam Moors just near Cardiff Bay, between 1931 and 1952. In 1941 construction started on the current airport site in Rhoose, to accommodate a wartime satellite aerodrome and training base for RAF spitfire pilots. In the early 1950s the commercial potential of the runway was realised, with Aer Lingus starting a service to Dublin from 1952. It wasn’t long before a new terminal building was built, followed by additional services from Cardiff Airport to other destinations. In 1971 the runway extended to double its length, and in 1986 another extension way made to the runway. This enabled the airport to handle 747 jumbo jets, and attracted the British Airways maintenance facility to Cardiff Airport.
